Fatigue Causes – Toxic Relationships, Energy Vampires and the “News”

Fatigue is a complex topic. If you are feeling tired all the time you can bet you are under the spell of a combination of fatigue factors. The culprits include but are not limited to: your diet, exercise, finances, work environment, lifestyle and the quality of your relationships. Today I’d like to address just one of these, relationships gone bad.

Do you feel more fatigue around certain people? I do. In fact three chronically fatiguing relationships are coming to mind right now!

One is with a silent type. With him I hold two conversations, one consists of speaking to him and the other consists of responding for him!  Another is with a deranged co-worker. Until she moves on I’ll have to stand her company once or twice a week. That final toxic relationship is me! Yes, like the song, “Don’t let me get me … I’m my own worst enemy.”

What’s a girl to do?! These exercises help me break out from the spell. They will work for you too.

WALK AWAY from Toxic Relationships
Toxic relationships can lead to poor mental, physical and emotional health. Nearly everyone involved in one becomes stressed out and ends up suffering from chronic fatigue, insomnia, and a host of other ailments.

If you’re in a toxic relationship that’s sucking you dry, you don’t have to stay. You can literally put one foot in front of the other and walk away. And while it might be easier said than done, eliminating toxic people from your life can be the most liberating and energizing experience you can give yourself. My own mind is not something I can eliminate but I can walk away from my thinking. Sometimes just climbing a couple flights of stairs or walking around the block is enough to reset icky thoughts and feel better.  “Mini-walks,” fifteen to twenty minute walks, are my favs. They fit easily into any office or home office schedule and are the ideal way to gently refuel tired adrenal glands.

Put Energy Vampires on Hold!
People who are negative and angry all the time are frequently referred to as Energy Vampires because they suck the life out of you. These Energy Vampires can be friends, family, co-workers, business associates, or customers.

When dealing with Energy Vampires on the phone, a simple solution is called Hold It! It’s simple. Just ask them to “Hold It.” Push that hold button and take a break from the conversation. Take the time you need to collect your thoughts, breathe deeply (through your nose and out your mouth) and relax. Then, when you are ready, get back on the line and handle the situation calmly.
Feeling victimized is exhausting. Remember – YOU have choices. Use them!

Take A Break From The “News”
Our T.V.s are a type of toxic relationship. While we may consider watching T.V. to be relaxing, studies show television viewing is addictive and that the more we watch it the worse we feel and, in turn, the more we watch it! Nowhere is this vicious cycle more obvious right now than with the “News.”

Oil spills, futile hunts for missing children, out of control national debt, riots in Greece, unemployment … hours of news makes for poor sleep and boosts feelings of depression, anxiety and mental fatigue. If you want a different output (energy) you need a different input (peace.) My suggestion is an easy-does-it News Fast!

Between now and Monday simply turn off the boob tube every night after 8:00 p.m. (If you can go cold turkey and turn off the T.V. all-day-long, do it!) Between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. relax, read something uplifting, visit with a friend, catch up with your spouse, have a glass of wine with a neighbor, take an evening stroll or write a thank you note.

How do these techniques make you feel? Drop me a note here or feel free to reach me privately at Viveca@FatigueBeGone.com
Take good care of yourself and have a fabulous 4th of July weekend.

Cheers,  Viveca
